With Tara’s loss of words, I will fill in with my own feelings. My thoughts and prayers are with the Ford family as a nation mourns the loss of a one of its finest who by no design of his own became president of the United States. He made consequential and controversial decisions while in office from the pardoning of Nixon to the appoint of Stevens to the Supreme Court.

For the next few days our flags will fly a little lower when one nation that is much bigger than its individual leaders mourns the loss of an individual that helped to make it great. A fitting tribute to the nation’s most humble President.

"I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your President by your ballots, and so I ask you to confirm me as your President with your prayers. And I hope that such prayers will also be the first of many."

Gerald Ford, 9 Aug 1974
