The Haughty Hearings

Yesterday, the following statement made by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) to Judge Sonia Sotomayor was both condescending and disrespectful (above and beyond his blunt question of whether or not the word 'abortion' appears in the Constitution which was followed up today by Senator Franken (D-Minnesota) asking if 'birth control' appears there):
"Some of the things trouble me, generally speaking left of center, but within the mainstream, and you have these speeches that just blow me away. Don't become a speechwriter, if this law thing doesn't work out, because these speeches really throw a wrinkle into everything."
It is unconscionable that a United States senator would make such a statement in a completely serious manner during a confirmation hearing of a Supreme Court nominee. His ridiculous and condescending statement was followed by a rapid fire questioning that held no purpose other than to more or less attempt to determine if the Supreme Court nominee defined certain legal terms precisely as Graham. The way in which these members of the Senate (on both sides of the aisle) are questioning Judge Sotomayor is despicable. The only thing more despicable than the questioning itself is that the internet reporting on the hearings is being met by racist, sexist and fear-provoking public comments.
